Alan Philpott on potential fight with Tom Duquesnoy: “It’s the perfect fight”

Screenshot_3 BAMMA bantamweight Alan Philpott recently competed at BAMMA 22 and took home a split decision win over Regis Sugden. Philpott wished the bout was slightly more exciting, but is still happy he got the job done. "Regis is a good guy. We had words leading up to the fight but it's part of the hype," Philpott told "I thought the fight was good and technical. It seemed like we both respected each other's skills and focused more on not getting beat than winning. It wasn't my best performance but I did what I had to do to win." The winner between the two was supposed to be rewarded with the Lonsdale bantamweight title, but it was only a title fight for Sugden because Philpott was unable to make the 135-pound limit. In a very odd situation, the belt was strapped around his waist anyways, when he was announced the winner. To clarify, in actual fact, he is not the champion -- the BAMMA crew just made a mistake. As soon as the final bell went, I was buzzing. I knew I deserved to win it but when I got to my corner, my coach pointed out that they had brought the belt in and with me missing weight we knew I couldn't have won it so I got a bit jittery," he explained. "When they called my name out, I was so relieved. I had a hard camp mentally, so to get through all the downs and win, it was great." Philpott has expressed his interest in a fight with current featherweight champion Tom Duquesnoy, who, following his split decision title defense over Brendan Loughnane on the same card, announced a drop down to 135-pounds. Philpott isn't in favor of Duquesnoy getting a crack at the bantamweight belt in his debut in the division, so believes this lines up a fight with 'Fire Kid' perfectly. "I'm a big fan of Tom and love watching him fight. He's dropping down and I think it's the perfect fight as I need a chance to prove myself by making weight and I don't think he should be getting the title straight away. Shay Walsh had to fight before getting his shot so I think it's fair Fire Kid does. But I'm ready for any of the guys at the top."
