Anthony Pettis vs. Edson Barboza scheduled for UFC 197

An explosive lightweight match-up between former champ and #3 ranked Anthony Pettis and #8 ranked Edson Barboza has been added to the already stacked UFC 197 card.

The UFC announced the fight on their official website. Pettis (18-4 MMA, 5-3 UFC) unsuccessfully debuted in the UFC, losing to Clay Guida before going on a five fight win streak which included a winning the lightweight title against Benson Henderson and defending it once against Gilbert Melendez. In March 2015, Pettis attempted to defend his title for a second time against Rafael dos Anjos, but was dominated for five round before losing a decision to the Brazilian. Most recently, "Showtime" fought Eddie Alvarez at UFC Boston but lost via decision. Pettis is currently riding a two fight skid for the first time in his career. Barboza (16-4 MMA, 10-4 UFC) has displayed vicious striking in the UFC, with stoppage wins over Mike Lullo, Terry Etim, Rafaello Oliveira and Evan Dunham. The Brazilian also holds decision victories over names such as Bobby Green, Danny Castillo and Paul Felder. Barboza is 3-2 in his last five but has been facing the elite of the lightweight division. In July of 2014, Barboza, who was coming off a loss to Donald Cerrone, stopped Evan Dunham in the first round before taking home a decision win over Bobby Green at UFC Fight Night 57. Barboza then fought Michael Johnson in February of 2015 and lost the fight via decision before rebounding, and taking home a decision over the aforementioned Felder in an explosive striking war. Most recently, the Brazilian engaged in a back and forth slugfest with Tony Ferguson before being submitted at The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale. UFC 197 takes place live from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in, Las Vegas, Nevada on April 23. The card currently features two title bouts as Jon Jones makes his long-awaited return to fight Daniel Cormier and Demetrious Johnson attempts to make the 8th defence of his flyweight title as he fights #3 ranked Henry Cejudo.
